The two chemistries
Closed-cell foam cures dense and rigid at around 2 pounds per cubic foot, delivers roughly R-6.5 per inch, and its tight cell structure makes it both an air barrier and a vapor barrier. That combination is why we use it on rim joists and crawlspaces where you want the most R-value in a shallow cavity plus real moisture control against Iowa humidity. Open-cell is lighter and softer at about half a pound, gives roughly R-3.7 per inch, and expands much further to fill irregular framing. It air-seals just as well but stays vapor-open, which suits attic roof decks and interior walls where you do not want to trap moisture on one side.
Cost tracks the density: closed-cell uses more material per board foot and costs more, so the right call is putting closed-cell where its moisture barrier and R-per-inch earn their keep and open-cell where the extra reach and lower cost make sense.
Iowa code, blower-door, and where not to use it
Applied at the right thickness, foam meets the R-value and air-tightness targets in the Iowa energy code for climate zone 5, and because it seals so well it often moves the needle most on a blower-door test, the measured air-leakage number an energy rater checks. Sealing a rim joist and crawlspace can tighten a whole house measurably.
Foam is not the answer everywhere, and we will tell you when another material fits better. A wide-open attic floor is usually cheaper and just as effective in blown cellulose, so we save foam for the air-leak-critical spots: rims, crawlspaces, and roof decks. We also flag any active water intrusion first, because foam should seal a dry assembly, not bury a leak that needs fixing.
